On May, 5, 1980, Tianjin and Melbourne became sister cities.

Melbourne is the capital and largest city of the State of Victoria, the second largest city of Australia. It is located on the lower reaches of the Yarra River, which is in the south-eastern part of mainland, and the metropolitan area is located on a large natural bay of the northern and eastern shorelines known as Port Phillip. The Greater Melbourne metropolitan area had an approximate population of 4 million(2009), within an area of  7,694km². 

Melbourne is a pivot for arts, commerce, education, industry, sports and tourism.

Melbourne is home to Australia's busiest seaport and much of Australia's automotive industry, which include Ford and Toyota manufacturing facilities, and the engine manufacturing facility of Holden. The city is headquarters for many of Australia's largest corporations, including  BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Telstrait. It is a major technology hub and has international freight as an important industry. 

Melbourne retains a significant presence of being a financial centre for Asia-Pacific. It rated 34th within the top 50 financial cities as surveyed by the Mastercard Worldwide Centers of Commerce Index (2007), two of the big four banks,  National Australia Bank,  and ANZ, are also headquartered in Melbourne. It is the home to famous representative bodies and thinktanks such as the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Council of Trade Unions. 

Tourism also plays an important role in Melbourne's economy, it overtook Sydney with the amount of money that domestic tourists spent in the city in 2008.

Melbourne has an integrated public transport system promoted under the Metlink brand, it has the largest tram network in the world. The Melbourne rail network consists of 16 suburban lines, its bus network consists of almost 300 routes which mainly service the outer suburbs fill the gaps in the network between rail and light rail services. The Port of Melbourne is Australia's largest container and general cargo port and also its busiest. Melbourne has four airports, of which Melbourne Airport is the city's main international and domestic gateway. 

Melbourne is the center of education and research. It has a large international student community and more international students per capita than any city in the world. The city's two largest universities are the University of Melbourne and Monash University.
