Nord-Pas-de-Calais is one of the 26 regions of France. It consists of the departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais, in the north and has a border with Belgium. It is an extremely densely populated region with 4,048,000 inhabitants in an area of 12,414km² . Its administrative centre is the city of Lille. Nord-Pas-de-Calais has a developed transportation network, it spends only one hour from Lille to Paris by TGV. There are 3 ports in the region. The lengths of its expressway are 464 kilometers. It leads to seven other European countries' capitals. Lille Lesquin International Airport is the mainly international airport.
The opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 was welcomed in the region as a means to boost its prosperity. Moreover, the beautiful scenery and rich history, make it the culture shrine of Europe in 2004.
