On September, 12, 1985,Tianjin and Groningen  became sister cities.

Groningen is the capital city of the province of Groningen, and the eighth largest city situated  in the Netherlands.It has been awarded the title Best city centre in the Netherlands. With a population of 185,000(2007-01-01), and an area of 83.69 km², it is by far the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. 

As the economic and cultural capital of the region, the city enjoys a bustling reputation, new businesses are offered space on 'themed' industrial estates, creating clusters of similar and mutually supporting types of business.Groningen now has separate areas for companies active in furniture, those dealing with environmental matters and those in the automotive industry. 

There are many world famous corporations in Groningen, include shipbuilding, metallurgy, machine and textile industry. The city's exploitation of the gas field ranks the fourth among the world. Many famous European corporations set their headquarters and offices in Groningen, such as the Royal Dutch Shell Group, Royal Dutch Philips Electronics Ltd., Unilever NV and Akzo Nobel N.V. Groningen is not only a prefect city for studying and working, and also a paradise for enjoying lives. In Groningen, there are different grades of shopping streets and hundreds of shops, as well as restaurants, bars, cinemas and clubs. 

The city has a high quality public transport network. Groningen is the hub of the Western Netherlands/Northern Germany distribution route, along which it offers excellent varied transport facilities, by water, land and air. The city enjoys excellent accessibility by road, via the A28 and A7 motorways.It also has direct inland waterway connections with the seaports at Delfzijl and Eemshaven. Its Airport Eelde is the main airport in the northern Netherlands.

 Groningen is a city of universities, inhabited on average by about 50,000 students. It is a well-developed and sturdy city of art because it is the cultural centre of the north, where architecture, design, theatre, or music are concerned.  The large number of students living in Groningen also contributes to a diverse cultural scene for a city of its size.
