On September, 23, 1991,Tianjin and İzmir became sister cities.

İzmir, historically Smyrna, is Turkey's third most populous city and the country's largest port after Istanbul. It is located along the outlying waters of the Gulf of İzmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the seat of İzmir Province, and is composed of eleven metropolitan districts. Its total area is 855 km²,the total population of the metropolitan municipality is 3,795,978 by the end of 2008.

İzmir is an important commerce center of Turkey, both industry and agriculture are developed. Its production value ranks the second, only after Istanbul, per capita production value ranks the third. It is a modern city with tidy streets, logical layouts, and complete educational and scientific institutions, active commerce, flourishing tourisms, convenient daily lives and inviting views. Mainly industry in this city includes textile, food, building material, shipbuilding, paper making, detergent, clothes, electron, metallurgy, chemical industry, communications-equipment, petroleum processing, architecture and etc. Among these, textile, food processing, steel and oil refining rank in the top of Turkey's industry. İzmir is one of the richest agriculture regions in Turkey. There is a free economic zone is being built in the northern suburb of the city. 

İzmir International Fair is the largest international fair in Turkey. It is held every year in August-September. In recent years, the government built the Ataturk Industrial Park and the tax-free trade zone to attract foreign investment. 

On the suburb, there are fertile fields and plenitudinous water, so the city's agriculture and animal husbandry are developed. Its mainly crops include wheat, beans, rice, cotton, date palms, grapes, oranges, grapefruits, figs, melons, tobacco and flowers, as well as the factory cattle farms.

İzmir 's main road and the road to Ankara, Istanbul and the tourist spots of Mediterranean have came into being an expressway system. The port has been expanded and the foreign trade cargo throughput is next below Istanbul. The city is served by national and international flights through Adnan Menderes Airport and there is a modern rapid transit line running from the southwest to the northeast. 

İzmir is an important tourism city in Turkey. It has a long history and many places of historic interest and scenic beauty. It attracts millions of tourists from all over the world visit here every year.
