On September, 27, 1992,Tianjin and Ulan Bator became sister cities.

Ulan Bator is the capital and largest city of Mongolia located in the north central part of the country. The city is an independent municipality, within a total area of 4,704.4 km², its population is 1,067,472(2008-12-31), 70 percent of which are young people.

It is the cultural, industrial, and financial heart of the country. Today, Ulan Bator has changed from a religious center to the political, economical and cultural center of the country. The main mineral resources near the city are coal. Most factories and enterprises of the country are located here. The main industries are light industry and food processing industry. The city's total value of industrial output is more than half of the country's, include farm and livestock product, leather, carpet, felt, soap, textile, clothing, cement, steel, brick making, auto repairing, wine-brewing and etc. The pure woolen carpets which are made by Ulaanbaatar carpet factory always won the medals in the Leipzig International Fair. Fur garment, cashmere and camel's hair products are mainly used to export and increase income.  

Ulan Bator is also the center of Mongolia's road network, and connected by rail to the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Chinese railway network. At home, it is the transportation hub of the country, the road networks and air lines lead to all the provinces. The city's Chinggis Khaan airport is the only airport in Mongolia that offers international flights.
