On January, 8, 1999,Tianjin and Hai Phong became sister cities.

Hai Phong is the third most populous city and the second largest port in Vietnam. It is an important port and industrial city located in the northeast of Red River Plain. It is the door on the sea of the capital Hanoi. Its total area is 1,507.57 km², with the population of 1,884,685(2008). 

There are about 200 large or small industrial enterprises in the city. The main industries include cement, ship building and repairing, machine, porcelain enamel, plastic, storage battery, glass and so on, some of the enterprises are built with China's help. Hai Phong Cement Factory is one of the largest cement factories in the north of Vietnam. It can produce cement 0.5 million tons per year. In recentl years, the industry of the city has been developing. Attracting foreign investment has a effect. Now there are 11 ship building yards and ship repairing yards, ships of 6 thousands tons can be built. There are also many pipe founding factories, steel casting factories, machine factories, aluminous products manufacturing factories, plastic factories, cement factories, chemical plant, cable factories, habiliment factories, shoes factories, brew house, carpet factories,  can factories and aquatic product processing factories.

There are only 270 hectares land can be used as agricultural land. The forest on the island is full of rare woods and animals.The inhabitants living on the island plant crops, fruit trees and herbal medicines, and they mainly feed themselves by fishing. And Cat Ba Island, 20 kilometers far away from Hai Phong, is a large fishery center in the north of Vietnam. 

    There is one railway station called Ga Hai Phong and an airport. There are three flights a day to Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, there are some coach stations. The railway, which was built by the French, is now very old, so most people choose to travel by coach.
